I've loved this painting since I was very young. It is one of four that appeared in the Time Life Book North America (part of a series called the Life Nature Library). The four paintings were superb, depicting mammals of the Eocene, Oligocene, Miocene, and Pliocene Epochs in North America.

Matternes also did prehistoric mammal art for Early Man, South America, and Australia in the same series.
